MARK WALKER meets the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Historical Archaeology and is HAZWOPER certified. He has extensive experience in the survey and excavation of both urban and rural historic archaeological sites ranging from a 17th-century Maryland settlement to a 20th-century coalminer’s strike camp in Colorado. He has directed over 30 projects in Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., New York, Colorado and California for a wide range of private clients and local, state, and federal agencies, including the California Department of Water Resources, the El Dorado Irrigation District, Caltrans, the US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Presidio Trust. Recent work has included assisting with Native American consultation and cultural resource protection in the Valley Fire emergency response, identification and evaluation of historic properties as part of remediation of the Argonaut Mine, and providing cultural resource services for the Central Subway Project in San Francisco and for remediation of contaminated properties in Eureka NV.

Mr. Walker’s research interests include issues of class and political economy in U.S. history with a focus on 20th-century rural industry and labor. He has presented over 20 professional papers, and has published in both scholarly and public venues on various aspects of archaeology including teaching, public interpretation, industrial archaeology, and labor history.
