Dave's Memories
David A. Fredrickson
(1927 – 2012)
Jean Moss, of Berkeley shared this memory:
I first met Dave in the 50’s when living in Saranap, now part of Walnut Creek. A neighbor’s teenaged daughter mentioned babysitting for a very odd couple; she wore no makeup, he “had hair on his face”. The job was boring as there was no tv, only science fiction to read, and nothing but folk music records for listening. As soon as possible I knocked on their front door and introduced myself to the Fredricksons. We became lifetime friends. Our daughters grew up together.
Dave gave me and later, my daughter Juanita the opportunity to volunteer on many digs in Contra Costa County over the years, including a long term excavation at the Dollar Ranch/Rossmoor site and later on in other counties. A dig on Bodega Head while Hitchcock was filming THE BIRDS was a highlight (tranquilized-drunk crows and seagulls attempting flight from fences as we drove past the ranch location along the low-tide access beach). On one memorable occasion we camped at 10 Mile River and enjoyed magnificent ocean views and spectacular sunsets while excavating house floors. On another, Veramae and Dave, my present husband Roger and I did a survey of sites at Shelter Cove and were paid – a first! When the checks came in the mail we signed them over to Dave as a donation to Sonoma State. Many years later he told us that those checks were the seed money for the Anthropology Lab. We couldn’t have been more pleased!
